Boats are constantly exposed to demanding conditions, making quality construction, skilled repairs and ongoing maintenance essential to their longevity and performance. Whether working on structural components, composite materials or custom modifications, experienced shipwrights bring the technical knowledge and hands-on skills needed to keep vessels in good condition.

In our latest Tenant Highlight, we introduce Lindsay Stead of BoaTEC Australia, bringing his shipwright experience, boatbuilding expertise and background in competitive sailing to White Bay 6 Marine Park.

Shipwright Skills and Boatbuilding Expertise

Boatbuilding involves a diverse range of skills, from understanding vessel construction and materials to carrying out specialist repairs and modifications.

Through BoaTEC Australia, Lindsay draws on his practical experience across the marine industry, with a background encompassing shipwright work, boat repairs and composite construction.

Working with different vessels and construction methods requires an understanding of how individual components come together, as well as the demands placed on them once a boat is back in the water.

This hands-on experience provides a valuable foundation for approaching boatbuilding and repair projects with care, precision and an appreciation of the finished vessel.

Experience Beyond the Workshop

Lindsay’s experience extends beyond the workshop, with a background in competitive sailing and offshore racing. His sailing experience includes major events such as the Rolex Fastnet Race, Middle Sea Race and Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Having been involved in these demanding offshore events, he understands first-hand the pressures placed on vessels and their equipment at sea. This practical perspective brings another dimension to his shipwright and boatbuilding knowledge, connecting construction and craftsmanship with the real-world demands of sailing.

Building for Performance

Lindsay’s passion for boatbuilding also continues through his current involvement in building the next generation of 16ft skiffs.

The 16ft skiff is a high-performance sailing class known for its speed, agility and demanding handling characteristics.

Building these vessels requires careful consideration of construction, materials, weight and performance, with every detail contributing to how the boat handles on the water.

For Lindsay, this work brings together his practical shipwright skills and passion for competitive sailing, demonstrating the connection between quality boatbuilding and performance on the water.
